Ptarmigan Music/Jazz is an indie record label founded by acclaimed jazz artist/composer/lyricist Karen Johns and producer/guitarist/songwriter James Johns, featuring swing-jazz and traditional jazz CD album releases by Karen Johns & Company.
In 2006, the debut PtarmiganMusic/Jazz release was the CD album Lucky Day, a collection of songs initially intended for the publishing catalogue of Vital Force (ASCAP) yet due to interest in the original work, it led Karen Johns & Company into the spotlight amidst jazz audiences and enthusiasts. Inspired by such positive response, in 2008 Karen Johns & Company released Star and Season. That LP hit the Top 10 station charts throughout the USA and overseas, sitting as high as #2, and was enthusiastically reviewed by national and international press and media, NPR, and FM/AM jazz radio worldwide.
Karen Johns & Company kept up the swinging success with the 2012 album release, Peach. That LP rose higher and more expansively, and remained longer on numerous national/international Top 40 Jazz charts, Top 10 Jazz release charts, and Top 10 station charts. Peach by Karen Johns & Company received outstanding accolades in a vast range of press/media reviews, and extensive airplay and interviews on NPR, and national and international FM/AM jazz radio.
Original jazz and swing songs by Karen Johns (Karen Houle Johns) “stand on their own next to classic, timeless American Songbook standards” and “contain the DNA of musical stage plays,” and press/media reviews such as these inspired the creation and release of the WWII Swing-Jazz musical libretto and score with double CD album, Karen Johns & Company presents AMERICAN MOTHER LODE, honoring the women of World War II.
